![Powerpoint](http://www.iwise.com/downloadPPT.php?quote_id=86847&author=Václav Havel"e=Seemingly+endless+negotiations+finally+led+to+the+division+of+Czechoslovakia.+It+had+one+great+advantage%3A+it+proceeded+calmly%2C+without+violence%2C+major+conflicts%2C+or+significant+unsolved+issues.+This+unusually+positive+split+brought+us+worldwide+respect.+But+it+also+had+one+disadvantage%3A+a+matter+of+such+importance+as+the+division+of+a+country+into+two+new+ones+was+not+decided+by+the+citizens+in+a+referendum%2C+as+would+be+appropriate+in+a+democratic+society.+Rather%2C+it+was+mostly+treated+as+a+technical+matter%2C+almost+as+if+it+were+an+accounting+operation.+Perhaps+for+this+reason%2C+the+end+of+Czechoslovakia+was+accompanied+by+an+unpleasant+aftertaste+and+awkward+feelings.+No+significant+part+of+the+citizenry+protested+the+division+then%2C+but+no+significant+part+celebrated+it+either.+It+was+as+if+there+was+nothing+to+say%2C+as+if+the+public+had+more+or+less+breathed+a+sigh+of+relief+at+the+endless%2C+traumatizing+bargaining+finally+being+behind+us.%0AAll+that+is+now+long-gone+%E2%80%94+is+history+%E2%80%94+and+after+all+this+time%2C+I+can+not+help+but+feel+that+no+matter+how+queerly+it+happened+then%2C+it+is+a+good+thing+that+it+happened.+Evidently%2C+most+peoples+must+taste+full+statehood+for+at+least+a+while+in+order+to+learn+to+cooperate+with+others.+Czechs+and+Slovaks+may+be+closer+today+than+ever+before.+There+is+no+animosity%2C+and+they+are+united+in+their+goals%3A+to+fully+participate+in+the+European+and+global+integration+processes+and%2C+in+their+own+interest%2C+to+gradually+forsake+some+of+their+countries%27+sovereignty+in+favor+of+increasing+influence+in+the+life+of+communities+vastly+larger+and+more+powerful+than+countries+are.+We+live+in+an+interconnected+world%2C+and+we+%E2%80%94+Czechs+and+Slovaks+%E2%80%94+walk+hand+in+hand+in+it.+And+that%2C+of+course%2C+is+what+is+most+important.%0A&image=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.iwise.com%2Fimages_web%2Fauthor_no_icon.png){kind=link}
